THANK YOU to everyone who attended Lobby Day on Friday March 22nd! There were 27 attendees, representing 16 districts!.
On Monday March 25th, the House Public Safety Committee heard the bill. Testifying in support of the bill were faith leaders from Catholic, Jewish, and Episcopal traditions, victim family members, former WA DOC leaders, Attorney General Bob Ferguson, and others. Twenty-four people signed in who are in favor of the bill. Two signed in opposed to the bill. There was no testimony from those opposed.
Former WA DOC Secretary Eldon Vail was one of those who testified. He was there on behalf of himself and the other 4 WA DOC Secretaries that have presided over all of Washington's executions in the "modern era." These 5 men are unified in their desire to see the death penalty end. You can read his plea to the legislature to end the death penalty in this piece recently published in the Seattle Times.
The bill passed the committee on Monday April 1st, 7 members voting for it and 4 opposed.
This is as far as the bill got in 2018, but we believe it will be brought to a vote on the House Floor this year. Bills don't come to the floor on a schedule, so we will be watching and waiting to catch the historic vote. You can watch for the Floor Schedule here; you can also watch the House Floor streaming online here. You can also catch up on the bill's progress this year and sign up to receive emailed notifications about the bill here. The bill must be passed by the House no later than April 17th - this is the home stretch!
These are also the last few days to participate in WCADP's email campaign! If you haven't already participated, please send an email to your legislators (click button below). If your Senator voted YES in February they will also receive a THANK YOU from you!
