These are the final 26 hours to pass SB 6052 on the House Floor. Cutoff is Friday March 2nd, at 5pm. Advocates are working hard to see a vote on the House Floor on Friday 3/2. We will update you with information as we receive it!

If you have not already done so, please do these 2 things NOW:

1. Email House Democratic Leadership
2. Email your legislators

We have created actions below to make this only take a minute of your time.

THANK YOU for all of your advocacy.

ACTION ITEM #1:

Email House Democratic Leadership and ask them to bring SB 6052 to a vote.
(Please note: We’re asking that only constituents in the 43rd LD contact Speaker Chopp - see action #2 below!)

Dear House Democratic Leadership,

Please bring SB 6052 to a floor vote. It’s time that we end the death penalty in Washington. It is very costly, is not applied fairly, and fails to provide swift and certain justice and it fails to deter crime. Instead of trying to fix an unfixable system, the legislature should repeal the death penalty. Please vote “yes” on SB 6052.

ACTION ITEM #2:

Email YOUR legislators!

The button below links to the action that Equal Justice USA put together to support the work in Washington. There is a targeted message to each legislator pre-populated (targeted to subsets of legislators). You may edit these messages. Below is some additional messaging you might consider adding to your emails to your legislators or to Speaker Chopp if you are in his district.

The Speaker of the House is in the 43rd District! He especially needs to hear from his constituents!

Optional additional messaging for legislators:

Please vote “yes” to support SB 6052, a bill to repeal the death penalty. Ending the death penalty is an important issue for me. The death penalty has failed Washington. It is very costly, is not applied fairly, and fails either to provide swift and certain justice or to deter crime. Instead of trying to fix an unfixable system, the legislature should repeal the death penalty. The default sentence for first-degree aggravated murder is already life without the possibility of parole, and this would remain the case. Please vote for SB 6052 and end the death penalty in Washington.

Optional additional messaging for Speaker Chopp:

Thank you for supporting death penalty repeal. I am a constituent in the 43rd Legislative District. I’m writing to today to ask you to bring SB 6052 to the floor for a vote. Ending capital punishment is an important issue for me and my community. SB 6052 has bipartisan support in both the House and the Senate, and I ask that you bring it to the floor for a vote. It’s time for Washington to end the death penalty. Thank you for your consideration.”
