Why, yes - it's a celebration.

Yes, we are upset that the House did not vote on SB 5339, the bill to end the death penalty. The votes were there, but the leadership was not

After the cutoff on 4/17, we did explore the possibility of enlisting some media pressure to bring the bill to a vote as a bill necessary to approve the budget, but that didn't get any traction. The bill is still "alive" and we expect there to be work to pass it next year.

But we are throwing a party. WHY? Because since last year at this time, Washington became the 20th state in the U.S. to abolish the death penalty.

In October 2018, the State Supreme Court unanimously ruled the death penalty unconstitutional. We are overdue to celebrate this historic win! The Washington legislature failed to clean up the statute in response to that ruling - but that doesn't change the fact that there is no death penalty here and there is no death row.

Decades of work have paved the way for this new reality in Washington State - activists, civic leaders, lawyers, academics - let's come celebrate together and tell some stories.

Please join us at 6 pm on May 15, 2019, at Optimism Brewing for a celebratory party and fundraiser. With every purchased ticket you will get a beer from Optimism! We will also have a spread of fixins to make tacos/burritos/bowls as well as plenty of non-alcoholic drinks. Tickets are priced from $35 - $100 for this fundraising event.

Do you have a story you'd like to share? We'll have a mic!

This also serves as WCADP's annual meeting, where members will vote in next year's Board of Directors.

HUGE thanks to Optimism Brewing Company for donating their space for this event!
